Policy makers, media outlets, election analysts, businesses, and others have critical needs for state-level data. For data to be useful, it is often necessary to have sufficient sample for analysis of geographic and demographic subdivisions and populations within states. Even where federal data collection is available, there may not be enough respondents to conduct in-depth analysis of groups within states. While state entities can commission their own research, methodologically rigorous research with sufficient sample sizes is a resource-heavy endeavor that can be prohibitively expensive. This idea group will explore ways of conducting research at the state and local level that is affordable for stakeholders without neglecting methodological standards of quality. We will briefly discuss techniques currently being used for state and local samples and then focus on the feasibility of state panels and other methods that might emerge from this idea group.
